Russia’s accession to the WTO and the missile shield in Europe

President Obama said that Russia and U.S. are making progress to agree on Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization after 18 years of talks and “we’re actually having an important conversation around missile-defense issues.[i]

Obama’s statement comes at a time when the Russian authorities expressed growing frustration over delays in its entry into the WTO and U.S. plans to deploy elements of its missile-defense shield in Europe.

President Dimitri Medvedev has warned that disregarding the interests of Russia could lead to a new arms race.
